Glenfarg freewheelers run the following events. These will be advertised within the village, and on social media
Dr Bike Days:
In conjunction with Neill McDonald, members of the community have their bikes checked over. We encourage owners to be involved in the process and learn a few tips for looking after their bike. Many people do not cycle because their bike is in a poor state of repair. With a quick improvement, the aim is that as many people as possible in the community will get back on the road – on their bikes!
Family fun days:
Linked with Dr Bike days, we run a biking experience day. We have run obstacle courses for kids and family “trailer experience” days for those not yet old enough to cycle themselves. These are usually in the Easter holidays, so keep an eye on the fliers. Relevant events will be advertised though the parent council at school.
Community Maintenance Days:
These are run as a 2–3-hour session with a specific topic. Community members sign up for a workshop and are encouraged to be directly involved with the process on their own bike. The sessions can be tailored to cover the following:
– General bike cleaning
– M check inspection – to make sure the bike is safe, roadworthy and identify what adjustments may be needed
– Puncture repairs
– General bike set up – seat, handlebars adjustments, brakes, gears wheels, lights
– Brake/chain replacements, or more specific workshop training on request
Note: We encourage young people to become involved and develop skills that will last a lifetime. Donations form the workshops will go towards the up keep of the bikes.
Social Rides:
On Thursdays, after Glenfarg Coffee and amazing cakes in the village hall, there is a social ride. This is not a lead ride but a shared ride. You can just turn up or let us know if you want to take part by joining the Whats app group. The length of the ride varies according to the group and sometimes we split into two groups. A popular shorter route is the Arngask loop of 5 miles but others are longer, finding routes through the countryside. The Glenfarg Community bus runs in conjunction with the coffee morning and riders could come by bus for coffee and join a ride using Freewheelers bikes. If you have specific needs or requests or need some confidence building to get back on your bike, then let us know.
We are happy to facilitate weekend rides and further adventures on e-bikes or pedal bikes, so suggestions are welcome!
Try a bike:
If you are not sure if you want to ride an e-bike or before you make a purchase, we can facilitate this. Just let us know what your needs are. This is a not-for-profit community project so we endeavour to meet as many needs as possible.
Linking with Nearby communities:
We like to link with other groups in the local area and will be continuing to do this in order to encourage social rides and events. We are looking into purchasing trailers for young children and any other ways to encourage cycling for ALL members of the community.
